eXiT group has installed a set of photovoltaic panels and batteries

Research group eXiT works, among others research lines, on the smart grids domain, developing methods and tools for an optimal exploitation of distribution power systems.

One important topic is the optimal utilization of the available generation and storage assets from different perspectives (distribution system operation, prosumer) and objectives (increase the penetration of renewable-based electricity generation, increase efficiency, reduce costs, etc.).

In order to have an installation that provides data to the research work, eXiT group has installed a set of photovoltaic panels and batteries that allows to supply power to the lab where their staff works. The photovoltaic generation consists of 14 panels (installed power 3,92 kWp, nominal power 3,7 kW), and it has been estimated that they will supply 5,970 kWh/year.  The capacity of the battery is 4 kWh.

On one hand, this installation will allow the eXiT lab to reduce its dependency of the power grid. As an example, last Monday 27th May 2019, 88% of the power consumed in the lab was self-produced by our photovoltaic panels. Moreover, during the day it was a surplus of photovoltaic generation that was consumed by other labs in the building. On the other hand, eXiT research group will take profit of this installation developing and testing software tools for an optimal scheduling of the generation and storage resources, minimizing the dependence of the lab on the grid or minimizing the costs taking into account energy tariffs.
