Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) in Biomedicine can be characterized as the scientific discipline related to the research and development of projects and/or applications to support biomedical tasks through knowledge and/or data-intensive computer solutions that, ultimately, seek to support and improve the performance of medical professionals. The growing Spanish participation in international conferences dedicated to the applications of AI, including Biomedicine, is a reflection of the intense activity of the research groups that work in this discipline in our country. In this context, IABiomed-net is posited as the first thematic network on AI in Biomedicine at the national level. The network incorporates a select number of research groups specialized in a wide range of AI techniques, that share the interest in the application of these techniques to the field of Biomedicine.

In the scientific realm, the IABiomed-net network aspires to become a common framework of communication and collaboration between research groups in AI in Biomedicine, which serves to promote relationships and synergies at the national level, as well as for its prospection at European level. The network also seeks to define guidelines and strategies to respond to the most pressing challenges in the healthcare area and in AI in Biomedicine. Finally, within the existing structure of the doctoral programs of the different participating universities, the network aims to contribute to the training of PhD students in AI in Biomedicine. In the socio-economic realm, the network aims to increase the visibility of research in AI in Biomedicine and of its potential impact on healthcare. Related to this, the network seeks to facilitate the transfer of knowledge about the latest advances in AI in Biomedicine to all stakeholders in the healthcare area.
